Author Biography
After being commissioned in Infantry from the University of Florida’s Army
ROTC in 1969, Felix Haynes served tours of duty in the former Panama Canal Zone
and Vietnam. After earning a masters degree in political science and a
doctorate in educational leadership, he served as president of two colleges and
one campus during a 35-year career in higher education. He attended the
United States Military Academy’s Military History Fellowship in 1994 and
developed and taught a course in American Military History.
His experiences in Panama and those of several other members of his family sparked
his interest in writing Bully!, a work of historical fiction set on
the Isthmus. Mr. Haynes has published numerous works, including No
Substitute for Victory, a 1960s fictional retrospective of undergraduate
students enjoying college life while looking ahead to probable service in the
Vietnam War, and If There’s Frost on the Chicken, a second prize winner in the
Hillsborough County Public Library Consortium’s LitWit contest in 2007.
He is currently working on a novel which ties current American politics to earlier
events in American history. In his spare time he enjoys lap swimming, service on
many community non-profit boards of directors, and spending time with his wife
of almost 44 years, their four grown children, and their first
grandchild.
